Relocating to Ottawa

fact

Relocating can be Hard

Relocating is hard, especially when you may not know much about the place where you’re headed and you may not have wanted to relocate at all. Trust me, I’ve been there. I lived in six provinces during my time in the military, buying and selling homes in three of them. The first time I moved to Ottawa, I didn’t know where to start with figuring out where you live.

My experiences of working with various Realtors across Canada played a big part in my desire to become a Realtor myself. I learned that a positive transition to a new city is a lot more likely when you’re working with a Realtor who has first-hand knowledge of the process and is organized in such a way to maximize what can be done in a short house-hunting trip.

Here’s what she had to say…

“Being new to Ottawa, Annalee helped me find the perfect house for my needs and made the move so much easier. Her attention to detail and stellar communication took away so much stress, I cannot say enough good things about working with Annalee. I would 100% recommend her to anyone moving to Ottawa, especially those in the DND/CAF, or other government relocations.”

ABSOLUTELY!!

Over the years, a consistent 80% or more of my business has come from military and Government of Canada employees moving to / from Ottawa through the Brookfield Relocation program. Working with someone who knows the system, from being posted personally, really minimizes the unknowns. I have built a network of trusted partners (mortgage brokers, lawyers, inspectors, and more) who work regularly with BGRS moves, and many of them are veterans themselves.

We will start with a detailed wants and needs analysis, followed up by a meeting to discuss all of the things that will play a factor in where you’ll want to be living in Ottawa. There are so many things to consider! Where are you going to be working? Do you want/need to take transit to work? How much space do you need/want in your home? Are schools and recreation important? These are just some of the things that will help me make suggestions of the  neighbourhoods that may work best for you and your family.

We have four school boards in Ottawa. Yes, four! French and English Public, and French and English Catholic. Both English boards also have french immersion programs. With a few exceptions, your choice of a home will set which schools your children have as options. If you’re looking for private school options, there are a multitude of those here in Ottawa as well.

Yes, absolutely! While it is certainly not ideal not to be able to see a home in person, it sometimes is the only option. Over the years, I’ve helped several people with their home searches while they’ve remained remote. Virtual showings and videos are neccesary, and sometimes having a trusted friend or relative attend the showings with me here in Ottawa can help. The key is to have really good and open communication, so there are no surprises when you do arrive in Ottawa to see your new home.

  1. Ahead of the HHT, we’ll prepare a priority list of your Top 10-15 homes. Typically on days 1 & 2, we’ll focus on these homes, with adjustments as necessary for new listings or sales.
  2. When we visit each home, you’ll grade each house on a scale of 1-10, but you can’t give it a 7. Anything that doesn’t earn an 8+ is off the list.
  3. Be prepared for long days on your HHT. Snacks, water, and slip on shoes!
  4. If at all possible, consider arranging for childcare during your HHT. Having a family member along for the HHT can be a life-saver, allowing you to focus on seeing homes for the first couple of days. If this isn’t going to work, we can chat and adjust things for the HHT.
  5. Pick a hotel close to the area you’re focussing on for your search. A downtown hotel may seem like a great idea, but if you’re shopping in Stittsville, it makes for a lot of traffic and lost time.
